CHSAA Secures Variance for High School basketball, 1A and 5280 League will have 2021 season
On December 21st, 2020, the Colorado High School Athletics Association (CHSAA) secured variances from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and state officials which will allow all 'Season B' sports and activities to begin practice on January 18th, 2021.
Among the High School sports approved falling under 'Season B' (Ice hockey, skiing, girls swimming, wrestling, basketball, and competitive spirit), basketball was the big news for many Denver Jewish Day School students and coaches, and many other 1A schools across Colorado. In addition to basketball players, Denver JDS Junior, Carter Bergman, will now be able to compete in his 2021 wrestling season on the George Washington High School Varsity Wrestling team.
Though a variance was secured to have a High School basketball season in Colorado, many things will be very different this year. For starters, all players and coaches are required to wear masks at ALL times - including practices and before, after, and during every game. Denver JDS will not be allowing spectators at any home games. However, Denver JDS recently purchased a HUDL Focus camera, which will live stream all of our home games to our YouTube channel in HD quality.
Denver JDS is a member of CHSAA, and the 5280 League in the 1A classification. All Colorado classifications will begin their High School basketball seasons on January 18th, and games will begin on January 25th. The 5280 League as of now is a full-go, and all 10 teams will be participating and competing for a Division title to advance to the state tournament. In the 1A Class, there will be no district or regional tournaments, and instead, there will only be a 24-team State Tournament. These 24 teams will be made up of eight district champions (there are eight 1A Districts, including the 5280 League.), and 16 'Wild Card' or 'At-large' teams.
Denver JDS will be sporting three High School basketball teams this season: Junior Varsity Boys, Junior Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys. The Denver JDS Varsity Boys team will be competing to receive a bid for this year's Colorado 1A Basketball State Championship Tournament.
"Denver JDS is thrilled that our high school students get to participate in 2021 High School basketball season." said Athletic Director, Josh Lake. "Basketball has been the school's most popular sport dating back for decades, and we know playing in a basketball season will provide our students with the opportunity to stay physically active and mentally healthy while doing something they love."
Denver JDS will be providing more information to our families and all Denver JDS Tigers Basketball fans soon - including a full-season schedule and live streaming details for all three teams.
