What's New

If last week's newsletter made you nervous, I don't think you should be. AI won't replace teachers anytime soon.
But, they can become the best Teacher Assistant you ever had!
Are you tired of grading countless assignments and struggling to provide personalized support for your students? Introducing the solution you've been looking for - AI bots.

First, let's briefly define what AI is. AI can be broadly defined as any computer system that is able to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, such as understanding natural language or recognizing objects.

These intelligent machines have the potential to revolutionize the way we teach and learn by providing personalized support to students, automating repetitive tasks, and creating engaging interactive experiences.
Here are 5 examples of how AI bots can be used in the classroom:

Tech tools for you

1. Tutoring:
AI bots can provide your students with real-time feedback and personalized instruction on a wide range of subjects, just like a human tutor would. ALEKS, an adaptive learning platform, is a great example of how these machines can be used to create customized learning paths for each student, making it easy to provide extra support for those who need it.

A quick explanation about how ALEKS works

2. Automation:
AI bots can also automate repetitive tasks such as grading assignments and essays. By using natural language processing algorithms, AI systems can provide feedback that is both more accurate and faster than traditional methods.  Gradescope, for example, uses machine learning to grade written assignments and multiple-choice tests, saving you time and allowing you to focus on more important tasks such as providing feedback to students.

3. Interactive experiences:
We had a little taste of how AI bots can be used to create engaging interactive experiences last week - if it's by using bot tools to generate pictures that bring to life ancient texts or even just bring a student's imagination into life - Here is an example of creative pictures made in Midjourney, an AI that will generate any image you have in your head (with the right directions of course):

And of course, if VR glasses are too much for you right now, just use AI to create virtual field trips. Google's Art & Culture Expeditions is a virtual reality platform that allows students to take virtual field trips to locations around the world.

4. Language learning:
Did you know that Duolingo is an AI bot?
For students learning a new language, AI-powered chatbots can provide interactive conversation practice and feedback on pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Duolingo is one such example that uses AI to make language learning more effective and engaging.

5. Personalized Learning:
AI can be used to personalize learning for each student. By tracking students' progress and identifying areas where they need improvement, AI-powered educational software can tailor content to meet each individual's needs, using data from students' interactions and performance to create personalized learning plans that cater to their specific needs. This approach has the potential to greatly improve students' outcomes by ensuring that they receive the right level of challenge and support.
For example, Carnegie Learning's Cognitive Tutor is a free tool that uses AI to create personalized learning plans for students.

AI bots have the potential to revolutionize the way we teach and learn. As educators, it's time we consider incorporating these tools into the classroom so we can make education more personalized, engaging, and effective for our students. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more innovative uses of AI bots in education in the future. This will upgrade the education system, giving students the support they need and giving teachers a helping hand with AI as your best TA.
