Color War is a unique school tradition that takes place each spring at Denver JDS.

The week-long program incorporates academic, athletic, artistic, and Judaic components and brings together all Upper Division (6-12) students for a time of intense learning and growth. The highlight of the year for many of our students, Color War is a unique way for a school community to connect and learn from one another.

Students often shine in the classroom in one subject or another, but many possess other talents that are not revealed by the regular curriculum. Each year during Color War, students amaze their peers, parents, faculty, and staff with a different side of themselves. The creativity and leadership students develop through Color War happen in unparalleled fashion.

A Week of Competitions

Color War begins with a surprise breakout on a Monday. Students are split into equal teams with sixth through 12th graders on each team. Competitions — including relays, egg toss, tug-of-war, assorted board games, Judaic challenge, lip sync, D’vrei Torah, sporting events, silly games and more — take place each day. In the evenings, students gather at school, and also later at team houses, to prepare for events and the final competition at the end of the week.

Final Presentations

At the culmination of Color War, each team presents an original song, dance, banner, or visual presentation, and a classroom decorated to reflect their team’s theme. While Color War is a competition with one winning team, the spirit of cooperation and treating one another with respect, honor, and sensitivity, all in God’s image (b'tzelem elokim) is the true hallmark of Color War.

While Color War is an Upper Division program, it is very much a school-wide experience. Throughout the week, Lower Division students are invited to observe, and where appropriate, participate in some of the excitement and activities.
