Middle School Advisory Program

We know that our middle school students face myriad transitions: a school environment that presents ever increasing academic expectations, bar and bat mitzvah preparations, increased opportunities for extra curricular activities, and evolving social norms to name a few.

The Middle School Advisory Program is designed to help students process the world around them and the way in which they respond to it. In their daily, small group meetings, facilitated by faculty advisors, students learn how to become productive participants in a sacred community. They come to realize that responsibility is paramount in all venues of life: school work, relationships, and personal choices.

Students see advisors as advocates and confidants, and advisors take the time to skillfully coach, mentor, and guide students through their middle school years.

Topics presented during the 20-minute advisory period include academics, time management, and how to communicate with teachers and each other. In addition groups explore the value of B’Tzelem Elohim, (Torah teaches us that all human beings are created in God’s image), healthy relationships and Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation (mostly 7th grade). Once a week, advisors facilitate “electives” that include team sports, theatre, and drama. Additionally, time is made for one on one conferencing between students and advisors in which academic progress and social well being is discussed and reviewed.
